It is a surreal portrait of Yadwigha, Rousseau's Polish mistress from his youth, lying naked on a divan. She gazes over a landscape of lush jungle foliage and lotus flowers, listening to a snake charmer playing the flute, surrounded by animals including birds, monkeys, an elephant, a lion and lioness, and a snake. An interpretation offered by Rousseau is that
