Hersey was a Methodist divine who was friends with the famous Liberian missionary, Melville Cox, himself traveled to and preached in the Liberian colony, was an advocate for Native American rights, etc., His own ministry was largely in Baltimore, where he traveled as a home missionary and worked both in white
